Il mito della caverna americana

Oggi una chiacchierata con una collega americana mi ha fatto venire in mente il mito della caverna di Platone. Ero con lei e con un collega italiano.

Il collega italiano (non vaccinato): Avete visto che hanno introdotto il green pass in Italia?  

La collega americana: Beh è un'ottima cosa. Credo che lo introdurranno presto anche qui.

Il collega italiano: Si ma non mi pare giusto...se non vuoi vaccinarti devi fare il tampone ogni due giorni? 

Io ("free vax" ovvero sono vaccinato ma capisco chi ha qualche esitazione): Credo che almeno un 20-30% non si vaccinerà, e prevedo qualche scontro perché la loro libertà sarà un pò limitata. 

La collega americana: Chi se ne frega, problemi loro se non vogliono vaccinarsi. 

E fin qui tutto in regola, i soliti scontri tra  pro vax e no vax. Niente di nuovo sotto il sole. Poi però ha aggiunto una frase: Fanno bene a mettere il green pass così si vaccinano, anche perché se non si vaccinano le assicurazioni aumentano i costi.

Io: Dici che gli aumentano il costo come quando aumentano l’assicurazione dell'auto quando fai un incidente ed è colpa tua?

Collega americana: No, non dico per loro, di loro mi frega poco, aumenteranno il costo a tutti perché se non si vaccinano, si ammalano e se si ammalano le cure costano. Se vanno a riempire gli ospedali sarà una spesa ingente per le assicurazioni che verrà girata a vaccinati e non vaccinati.

Non ci avevo pensato! E mi ha fatto capire meglio il disprezzo che provano molti Americani con cui ho parlato non solo per i no vax ma anche per chi fuma, chi beve e chi è obeso. Eh ti credo...ne va delle loro tasche! 

Ma già che mi incuriosisce di più non è questo disprezzo ma il fatto che accettino che da decenni gli ospedali e i medici, gli specialisti, le case farmaceutiche possano aumentare i prezzi senza limiti e controlli. Le assicurazioni aumentano i costi, certo, ma lo fanno anche perché è alla base che aumentano i costi. Ma poi penso che non è colpa degli Americani. Se hanno sempre e solo conosciuto questa realtà non possono desiderarne un'altra. Se hanno sempre vissuto nella caverna come possono aver visto altre realtà? Al massimo qualche ombra muoversi nella grotta.

La speranza è che internet faccia conoscere nuove realtà anche agli Americani, troppo spesso chiusi in se stessi. Forse i tempi sono maturi per un cambiamento, e non solo in termini di sanità pubblica ma anche per le condizioni di lavoro. Come scrivevo in un post precedente molti Americani, dopo il lockdown della pandemia, hanno realizzato che le loro condizioni lavorative sono ai limiti della povertà e dello sfruttamento e stanno valutando se tornare al lavoro. Se lo faranno, in tanti pretenderanno condizioni migliori. 

E se un giorno gli Americani spezzassero le catene e uscissero dalla caverna? Io glielo auguro. Sono un popolo fantastico ma possono migliorare in un paio di aspetti...Dai che ce la facciamo.

P.S. Questo è ovviamente un post polemico. Ogni tanto un post polemico ci sta, che dite? Accettatelo per quello che è e non prendiamoci a sediate. Peace and Love.

I motti dei 50 Stati americani

Sapevate che oltre al nickname ognuno dei 50 Stati americani ha anche un motto? In questi giorni in cui sto studiando la storia americana per prepararmi al colloquio per la naturalizzazione, mi è venuta la curiosità di andare a leggermi i motti con le loro origini e significati. Molti di essi sono in latino, probabilmente per conferire un senso di sacralità, epicità e immortalità ma ce ne sono anche altri in inglese, in spagnolo e...con mia grande sorpresa uno in Italiano! I motti che mi hanno incuriosito di più:

 - Eureka! (California): la celebre espressione Eureka! (Lo ho trovato!) del matematico Archimede è associato alla scoperta dell'oro in California nel 1849. 

 - Dirigo (Maine): mi sarei aspettato un motto meno autoritario dal tranquillo Maine. Allude allo stato che guida rettamente la vita dei propri cittadini. E' interessante che nella bandiera ufficiale del Maine la frase si trovi sotto la stella del Nord, che da sempre guida i marinai in mare. Dirigo assume così un significato più romantico.

 - Oro y plata (Montana): semplicemente le due risorse principali dello stato soprannominato anche Treasure State.

 - Crescit Eundo (New Mexico): E' il motto più enigmatico di tutti e vuol dire "cresce col suo avanzare" A molti è sembrato uno scherzo e qualcuno scherzando dice che forse è un riferimento allusivo all'organo maschile. Si riferisce in realtà al De Rerum Natura del filosofo Lucrezio che descriveva alcuni fenomeni naturali che crescono sempre più, seguendo le leggi della natura più che quelle divine. Allo stesso modo cresce, migliora, lo stato.

 - Fatti maschi, parole femmine (Maryland): l'unico motto in Italiano che forse più del precedente ha fatto discutere. Molti lo hanno erroneamente definito un motto sessista perché se tradotto alla lettera Deeds are males, words are females può trarre in inganno. Ma se tradotto correttamente in Strong deeds, gentle words assume tutt'altro significato.

 - Friendship (Texas): questa non la sapevo! Il motto è la traduzione letterale del nome dello Stato. Tejas nella lingua nativa americana vuol dire infatti amicizia! 

 - Sic semper tyrannis (Virginia): letteralmente "Così sempre al tiranno" che detta così non si capisce molto. Ma va letta osservando la sua posizione sulla bandiera sotto l'immagine della dea romana della Virtù che calpesta un tiranno. Insomma, eventuali aspiranti tiranni in Virginia state attenti: se ci provate farete la stessa fine. 

I miei sei motti preferiti:

(Il motto dice tutto)

#5 Alis volat proprii - Oregon

("Vola con le proprie ali", riferito allo stato indica la sua sete di indipendenza e il suo orgoglio)

#4 Friendship - Texas

(Ancora non mi capacito che Texas vuol dire amicizia. Bello)

#3 Ad Astra per aspera - Kansas

("Attraverso le difficoltà si arriva alle stelle". Per un appassionato di fantascienza è il motto perfetto)

#2 Montani semper liberi - Montana

("I montanari sono sempre liberi". Mi fa venire in mente la mia Basilicata tra monti e colline)

#1 United we stand, divided we fall - Kentucky

(Beh è anche il motto implicito di tutti gli States, soprattutto dopo l'11 Settembre)

Honorable mention, ovviamente, Fatti Maschi, Parole femmine. Bellissimo che abbiano applicato un motto italiano a uno stato americano. Forza Maryland! 

I nicknames dei 50 Stati americani

Sapevate che ognuno dei 50 Stati americani ha un soprannome ufficiale visibile sulle targhe delle automobili? Quando davanti a me si piazza la macchina di qualcuno che viene da uno stato lontano leggo sempre il nickname. E sapevate che la capitale dello Stato non è quasi mai la città più grande ma una piccola cittadina dove si trovano gli uffici governativi?

Le 100 domande per la cittadinanza americana

Tra circa un mese sarà il grande giorno del mio colloquio per la naturalizzazione americana. Una parte consiste nel rispondere correttamente ad almeno 6 su 10 domande sul governo, la storia e la geografia degli Stati Uniti. Mi faranno probabilmente anche altre domande per testare il mio livelli di inglese scritto e orale e forse delle domande sui miei circa 18 anni negli Stati Uniti, sul perché ho deciso di venire qui nel 2004, perché poi ho deciso di tornare in Italia per un paio d'anni e perché ho deciso di tornare di nuovo in America. Sulla carta dovrebbe essere un colloquio sereno, quasi una formalità, ma l'emozione può sempre tirare dei brutti scherzi e non vorrei fare come un mio amico che alla domanda del Prof "What's your name?" lui prontamente rispose "It's 10 o' clock in the morning".
